Churchyard and Cemetery

Swanton Morley Parish Council is responsible for the Churchyard and Burial Ground within the village.  As these are two substantial roles, a separate sub-committee was established to monitor and maintain these areas. The Chairman of the Churchyard and Burial Ground Sub Committee is Marilyn Thomas.

Burial Ground Pathways Project

In November 2004 the Parish Council agreed to upgrade the pathways at the Burial Ground.  This was done for several reasons:

  1. To improve the aestheticism of the Burial Ground, thus making it a more pleasant place to remember loved ones.
  2. To create a pathway that was suitable for users of wheelchairs, so that no-one need be excluded from using the ground.
  3. To create a low maintenance pathway that would resist weed growth.

This was a large project for the Council and much work was done to find a suitable contractor that was able to lay a good quality surface that complied with the Disability Discrimination Act 2004.
The surface chosen was called Fibredec, a membrane that helps prevent weed growth on the path. This was topped with 6mm golden gravel.
The work on the pathways was completed in June 2006, with the results being a great asset to the village and for all those who come remember their loved ones for generations to come

Memorial Garden Project

Following several expressions of interest from Parishioners, the Parish Council have decided to create a Memorial Garden within the Burial Ground.  Families and Parishioners are invited to plant a rose in remembrance of their loved ones. Please click here if you would like to plant a rose in our memorial garden.
